Medik8 - The Green Cosmeceutical
Posted in 'Brands' on May 2, 2010
I suffer from sensitive skin so I was super excited when I heard that the Medik8 brand was now available from the Facial Company.
So, what exactly are green cosmeceuticals? According to Elliot Isaacs founder of Medik8 his idea is to take natural extracts and engineer them to make them more active. Another contributing factor is that apart from being kinder to the skin, it turns out this new technology is kinder to the planet too. The challenge for Medik8 is to make an effective professional skincare formulation that is less aggressive than standard cosmeceuticals without reducing the potency. The brand strives for no irritants in its products, so ingredients are chirally correct and bio available, for better absorption into the skin. The products are sulphate, soap and paraben-free. The company also uses carbon neutral packaging including recycled glass and HDP plastic. Medik8 has a menu of products designed for specific skin problems such as acne, age spots, hyperpigmentation, rosacea and sensitive skin.
Here is a highlight of the 4 steps featured in a Medik8 routine:
Medik8 Cleanse
Five advanced cleansers that are suitable for all skin types and different skin concerns.
Medik8 Prevent
Medik8 antioxidants feature the very latest innovations including unique patented ingredients with proven activity for the prevention of premature aging.
Medik8 Correct
To help repair collagen damage diminishing the appearance of lines and wrinkles, improving uneven skin texture, pigmentation, reducing redness and hypersensitivity and more. Medik8 Correct products go to work on your ageing skin.
Medik8 Hydr8
Protect the skin from photo-ageing and hyperpigmentation with our broad-spectrum moisturisers. At night build collagen and exfoliate to intensively rejuvenate photo-damaged skin, renew skin texture and help to improve the appearance of tired skin while you sleep.
I find as a sensitive skin sufferer a lot of professional skincare treatments I have tried are just too aggressive and tend to exacerbate the problem. Medik8 have some amazing looking products lined up including their formulas that deal with redness (another issue I have been trying to resolve, unsuccessfully, for years). I now have my eye on CE-Tetra, a super-stable vitamin C serum that reduces sun damage and age spots as well as improve the skin’s texture and brighten the complexion. Overall, I have discovered they have some very appealing anti-ageing goodies for those of us who finds it hard to tolerate certain skincare products.

Now that winter is approaching, the drop in humidity always dehydrates my lips. The weather this time of the year always takes its toll on my smackers, and I wind up suffering from dry, flaky chapped lips. Fortunately, I always have a lip balm (or two) stashed close by, readily available in my handbag, next to my bed, in my makeup bag, bathroom, kitchen and even in the car. With an accessible supply of luscious lip balms on hand, I can be certain my lips will be soft and subtle all year round.
If you want to maintain moisturised crack free lips it is vital that you get into the habit of applying a lip balm, especially before you head outdoors to not only sooth your lips and keep the moisture locked in but to also protect them from the harsh weather conditions you could be facing during the cooler months.
Here is a line up of assorted lip balms to ward off those unsightly chapped lips and keep your puckers smooth and kissable any time of year.
SPF Lip Balm
Even in the coldest weather, your lips need safeguarding against the ultraviolet rays. If you are going to be outside at any time then you need to arm yourself with a lip balm that has a SPF 15 or higher to offer extra protection.
dermalogica solar shield spf15
This SPF15 lip balm provides sun protection and a moisture shield while being water resistant for up to 80 minutes.
Tinted Lip Balm
A great alternative to lipstick or gloss, a tinted lip balm has the benefits of adding both a touch of colour and hint of shine in the one ‘go-to’ lip treatment.
shizen lip conditioner pinkie
This tinted lip conditioner allows you to moistuirise and colour your lips at the same time while keeping them protected from the environment.
Natural Lip Balm
Instead of a synthetic lip balm, if you prefer go ‘all natural’. These natural variations contain no harsh chemicals and are extremely effective and beneficial without stripping away the moisture from your lips.
simplicite angelica lip care balm
This lip balm not only sooths cracked lips caused by the wind it also reduces fine lines and protects from further damage.
Deluxe Lip Balm
For those occasions when you want to use an exquisite quality product, that is usually ‘pretty special’ to add a little luxury to your lips.
the lip slip by sara happ - luxe balm
A balm like no other, the lip slip leaves no colour, just the richest, glossiest hydration imaginable!
Everyday Lip Balm
These are affordable lip balms making them the ultimate impulse purchase. You use it constantly because it delivers results and feels so good on your thirsty dehydrated lips.

Wing It! - The Purrfect Cats Eyes
Posted in 'Skin tips' on May 31, 2010
The glamorous fifties and sixties era never goes out of fashion when it comes to recreating makeup looks. Winged eyeliner, as we have spotted on the catwalk and red carpet is the perfect way to capture a bit of elegance and class. With some practice and a steady hand, you too can create this versatile style, which offers the illusion of fuller lashes and bigger eyes.
STEP 1
Always use a primer before applying your eye makeup to maximise colour and extend the wear. Coat your eyelids with a touch of bareMinerals prime time eyelid primer using the handy applicator and allow to dry. Apply napoleon perdis china doll concealer to the eyelids to even out any discolouration and then dust a light layer of napoleon perdis translucent loose powder over the top. This will reinforce both your eyeshadow and eyeliner adhering smoothly.
STEP 2
Next brush a flesh toned eyeshadow or bareMinerals multi-tasking face onto your eyelids and browbones for a stay-true colour. Then layer a light pink eyeshadow such as bareMinerals loose eye shadow in blush across your lids stopping at the crease.
STEP 3
Gently stretch your eyelid towards the outer edge so that it is taut. Using a gel based eyeliner and brush, or even better yet, a precision pen such as napoleon perdis neo noir liquid liner black, begin at the inner corner of the upper lid. Apply a line of eyeliner and stay as close to your lashes as possible, allowing it to get thicker as you approach the outer corner. Then curve the line slightly up and extend out towards your temple. Beginning at the centre of the eye, apply the liner to your lower lid until it meets the eyeliner on the top. Make sure you fill in any spaces between the lines by shading with your eyeliner. (If you find it a little difficult to get a straight line, you can make a few dashes on your eyelids and connect them with the liner. With practice, you will be able to apply it with one easy swipe)
STEP 4
Curl your eyelashes and apply a thick layer of glo minerals volumizing mascara to your upper lashes and a light dusting to the bottom. Alternatively, false eyelashes can add some extra oomph and glamour to this look, apply either a strip, or individual lash clusters from napoleon perdis lash patrol into your natural lashes, and follow with a generous coat of black mascara.
Complete the look: Using your finger blend concealer on your lips to obscure their colour. Then use a napoleon perdis sable lip brush 3h to apply a nude pink lipstick. I like napoleon perdis devine goddess lipstick in hess, but ideally, the colour nude you select should be matched to your skin tone. Finally, sweep a peachy pink glo minerals blush in sweet over your cheekbones.
There you go, it is not as hard as it looks! Have you mastered the art of applying purrfect eyeliner? Please feel welcome to add any tips.... Mel
