Get to know your skin

Posted in 'Skin tips' on October 27, 2009
How many times have you purchased skincare products to find they do not work and you never use them again?  You do not know what type of skin you have; therefore, you do not know how to care for it properly.  This was an ongoing saga for me until recently when I discovered a book called THE SKIN TYPE SOLUTION - A Revolutionary Guide to Your Best Skin Ever by Dr. Leslie Baumann (a world-renowned dermatologist).  This book helps you assess the type of skin you have and determine what products and procedures are best for you.

How do you find out your skin type?
By taking the questionnaire in The Skin Type Solution book.  It will help you figure out if your skin is dry or oily, sensitive, pigmented or wrinkled and then you will be able to use your skin type as a guide when selecting products and treatments.

After you have established your skin type, the author then offers suggestions into developing a specific facial care regime, recommended products, and my favorite part of the book, listing ingredients to avoid and others that are effective.  As far as some of the product recommendations are concerned, you just have to take that with a grain of salt.  Is she endorsing certain products for financial gain?  Possibly.  However, enough information is provided so that you can seek out alternatives.  I have opted to use some of the products she has suggested, but if I choose not to then I can still look for other products containing the same active ingredients.  I have compiled a list of these ingredients that I always carry with me, in my purse, and before I purchase any new skincare, I just whip out my list, to check the ingredients and see if they are suitable for my skin type.  I know that it will help me avoid making costly mistakes in the future.

I believe this book is very informative and it has definitely helped me make some well-informed, positive changes that are well and truly, paying off.  So get your hands on a copy of the book, (I found it at my local library) take the questionnaire, discover your skin type, and find the products you really need.

I was surprised at the results, after being under the impression that I had combination skin, my whole life, only to discover from the questionnaire results, that my skin is actually slightly oily.  To be honest though, everything Dr Baumann has to say, when it comes to describing my skin type profile, is correct.  Just to think I wasted all those years purchasing the wrong products because I had incorrectly ascertained the type of skin I had.  I now recognise I am an “OSPW” skin type, (Oily, Sensitive, Pigmented, Wrinkled) and can therefore shop for the appropriate products to address my needs.  I now challenge you to take the quiz and reveal; what skin type are you?

Some of the products that I learnt about in the book, that were recommended for my type, I have since tried and now love, such as Dermalogica Medibac Clearing Skin Wash and MD Formulations Vit-A-Plus Iilluminating Masque.  I hope that you too can get on the right track and explore a complete new range of skincare products and ingredients that are perfect for your skin type.
